I am not the character in JM Coetzee’s novel Elizabeth Costello, but she and I are both writers. I have no plans to write a novel called JM Coetzee, although turnabout is fair play. I write arts criticism and other nonfiction, poetry, and fiction. Occasionally I step across the border and perform spoken word with musical accompaniment or participate in experiments in physical theater. I like the possibilities that emerge with collaboration and I take much pleasure in moving my body. I’m sure that yoga (mostly Iyengar) and dance (mostly West African-influenced) have helped my writing, but I’m not sure that it works the other way around.
